It’s possible, but unlikely, that the transmission filter is VERY plugged. If it’s original from 1985, it’s possible. A completely plugged filter will restrict the line pressure in the transmission, causing it to not be able to fully hydraulicly apply the bands like it’s supposed to. A filter kit and 3 or 4 quarts of fluid should cost about $20, or have a garage change it (usually about $50 these days). Hydraulic pressure is everything in an automatic tranny. Too much and it burns up. Not enough, and it doesn’t work properly (and burns up).
Once I saw a transmission cooler get crimped and cause a tranny not to work properly. You can check this with a 6″ piece of high pressure fuel line. Disconnect the cooler lines from the radiator, and route them to each other with the hose and a couple of clamps. If it works, the radiator should probably be replaced.
Depending on the transmission you have (AOD or C-5/C-6), there may be external band adjustments that could solve the problem, but thats only a stop-gap measure at best, and is best left to someone experienced it adjusting them – too tight or loose and kiss the tranny goodbye.
On a brighter note, getting a used tranny for that car should be real cheap, and replacing them is an easy one day operation.
    Hope that helps.

It may have fluid but if it hasnt been changed in a while and especially with the problems you are having it will be “burnt”. Put a drop on your finger and smell it!!!
Burnt fluid loses all its properties and needs to be replaced.
Bottom line – have a service on your transmission while will obviously include a fluid change.
You may be lucky and it may fix the slipping – car in its present state – you really have nothing to lose.
Automatic transmissions do not have a clutch, manual trans has the clutch.
Best of luck – hope all goes well.
    Cheers

problem is u need a new tranny… 1200 to 1400 including rebuilt torque converter

If it’s an automatic… there is no clutch.
Sounds like it’s time to have the trans rebuilt… or replaced. You may have a bad torque converter… but will still need to come out to confirm.
ON CONTRARY to what some people may say… the infamous “change fluid” trick because it “smells burnt” is a bunch of hogwash… but try it if you’d like, though I believe you’re wasting your time and money!
    - Good Luck!

you could have a dirty pick up filter inside of the trans that is on the pump. You could drop the pan and change the filter. Its not rocket science.
